Dr. Walter C. Taylor III, MD
Dr. Walter C. Taylor III, MD graduated medical school from Hahnemann University, Philadelphia, PA in 1983 and completed a family medicine residency at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA in 1986 and a sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH in 1987.
He was team physician for the University of Connecticut from 1987-1988. Dr. Taylor then joined Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI, serving in both the Center for Athletic Medicine, Department of Orthopedics and the Department of Family Medicine from 1988-1994. During that time he was team physician for University of Detroit-Mercy and several professional teams including the Detroit Drive Arena Football Team, The Detroit Rockers Indoor Soccer Team and the Detroit Turbos Indoor Lacrosse Team.
In 1994, Dr. Taylor joined the Department of Family Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He achieved the academic rank of Assistant Professor of Family Medicine in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Taylor served as the Program Director for the Family Medicine Residency for 10 years and also as Program Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship for 14 years at Mayo Clinic. He retired from Mayo Clinic in 2017 and is Emeritus staff.
Dr. Taylor served as a tournament physician for the Women’s Tennis Association Tour (WTA) Bausch and Lomb Tennis Tournament, Amelia Island, FL from 1999 - 2008, and Head Tournament Physician from 2006 - 2008. In 2009 and 2010 he served as Head Tournament Physician for the MPS Group Championships, Ponte Vedra Beach. From 1999 to 2003 Dr. Taylor helped coordinate and provide pre-participation physicals for the ATP Tour. He continues to serve as Medical Advisor for the WTA Tour, which he began in 2009.
Dr. Taylor served on the Board of STMS as Treasurer for 4 years and now serves as President. He has presented at multiple STMS conferences on various topics.
